The Do’s and Don’ts of what to wear for a photoshoot!

One of the first questions I get asked when people book an photoshoot with me is what they should wear. So I thought I would create this little list of do’s and don’t’s to make it as easy as possible.

The most important thing to realise when you read through this is that it is just advice and you absolutely do not have to follow it. Comfort and happiness are key to any good photoshoot. If you dress yourself (or any member of your family) in clothes that either aren’t their style or are uncomfortable, then will all the best will in the world, those smiles will not be genuine and they definitely won’t spread to the eyes!

So please feel free to take on my advice and adapt for to your family!

  • wear clothes are comfortable;
  • wear clothes that represent you. If you normally wear jeans, t-shirts and trainers then don’t show up in a floaty dress and high heels as you won’t feel like yourself;
  • wear layers in the Autumn and Winter. This gives us more options for different combinations of clothing.
  • feel free to wear sunglasses in the Summer but I will ask for you to remove these for some of the photos.
  • think about footwear. My shoots are all outdoors and quite active and physical (for all members of the family) so you need to wear something comfortable. Plus high heels could sink into ther ground;
  • try to co-ordinate by having a colour tying you altogether, even if it’s through accessories.

  • all wear clothes in colours that clash. This can make it difficult for grouping and posing individuals together;
  • wear clothes wear big motiffs or patterns that could distract away from your face;
  • feel like you all have to wear exactly the same clothes (e.g denim on the bottom and white t-shirts. This can look amazing but you don’t have to match in order for the styling to work.
  • try to arrange your kids hair into fancy hair styles if it’s likely to fall out and create big stress for you! Just bring along a hairbrush and make sure it looks as neat as possible!

So that’s one aspect taken care of, but what about the colour choices? Well I have created these Pinterest boards that hopefully will help give you some inspiration and help. Again – this is guidance not an absolute must!

That is guidance for specific seasons whereas below I have attached links to Pinterest boards for specific minishoots or times of year that I run, just in case you need it!

I really hope this has been helpful on what you could wear to your outdoor photoshoot with me but, as always, if you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
