Puppy Photography

Whether you are a first-time puppy parent, a soon-to-be puppy parent or a regular puppy-parent – congratulations! I hope life is going well and you are all having the time of your life! There is absolutely no doubt that having a puppy is exhausting, heart-warming, frustrating and joyful all at once!

I got my first (and so far only) puppy 12 years ago but I have to be honest, apart from the snippets, I have completely forgotten the chaotic wonder that those first few weeks brought. You just sort of get on with things don’t you? I was very lucky that my husband had just recently purchased a new camera and so Josie was the perfect excuse to try it out and snap away!

And I am so so pleased he did. Because I still have as many puppy pictures up around the house as much as the older and more distinguished pictures of Josie! You forget how massive their paws used to look, or how much excess skin they had! You forget about their weird habits of having to always sleep with their head in daddy’s shoe (yes Josie did this constantly) much like you forget what toys used to be their favourites!

That is why I am starting to offer puppy photography as part of my dog photography options as I appreciate just how important it is to capture those early days!

Alternatively you may want a puppy photography shoot to take some beautiful new images of your new litter of puppies either so you can sell the puppies or provide a beautiful image to the new parents of one of your puppies!

Whatever your reason for wanting images, I can absolutely help you get beautiful images for you to treasure forever!

Where can we have our puppy shoot?

So puppy shoots need to be carefully planned out due to the fact that puppies can’t go outside with other dogs for a while due to their injections etc. I would strongly recommend having a puppy shoot in your own back garden, which although may not be as picturesque as you’d like, it is safe and means the puppy will perform beautifully for the camera rather than getting distracted easily by other dogs out on walks!

I tend to allow an hour for these shoots. That allows the puppy to have some crazy play time and then evetually they’ll wear themselves out and crash out. This means that I can get all the cute photos of them sleeping whilst they are stationary!

If, however, your puppy has already had their jabs and you want to capture them on their first walk then I would recommend somewhere more remote rather than the local park as you want to capture them on their own being all cute, rather than them running away and not coming back!

How does puppy photography work?

My puppy photography shoots are so simple and so fun. Depending on the age of your pup, we can either meet out on location or I am happy to come to your house and shoot there. If you have a litter that you want photographed, it makes sense to do them one at a time on a blanketed surface (a table works well as it prevents them running off). It also works to have any little treats to hand to try and capture their interest.

If we’re out on location, then somewhere quiet is preferable so that we don’t get disturbed by other dogs. Puppy shoots are hard enough without the added distraction of new smells, faces and bottoms to sniff!

It’s also well worth having some little puppy treats and suitable toys that we can distract them with and engage them with to encourage them to stay put in one place for longer!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need to bring anything?

Not apart from the normal things you would take on your walk. I will bring a bag of dog biscuits or cocktail sausages with me, as I have found in the past that the dogs will do anything for me once they have discovered my sausage stash! This is entirely at your discretion though!

What do we do if the weather looks miserable?

I will always try and postpone our shoot if the weather is gross, as not only will it look miserable in the photos, but I will end up lying in far too much mud!

Can I have a couple of photos taken with my dog?

Of course! They are your babies and I don’t blame you in the slightest for wanting to have a couple of with them.

Please feel free to contact me and ask any questions – I would love to hear from you!
