Photo Shoot with the Cousins in Beautiful Twyford
For me, the best bit about being a family photographer in Winchester, is the variety that my job brings! One day I might be photographing a Golden retriever in Chandlers Ford and the next day a newborn baby in Romsey! Every day is different and I absolutely love that about it – it’s true what they say – variety really is the spice of life!
Anyway – for this particular shoot I had been called upon by Mum to photograph four gorgeous cousins. The youngest two cousins actually live in the Caribbean and were only over for a precious couple of weeks, so Mum wanted to make the most of their quality time together by capturing the relationships and closeness that these cousins share, despite the geographical distances between them on a day-to-day basis!
Now one of the first questions I ask my clients when they book a photo shoot with me, is do you have a specific location in mind? Very often I am asked to recommend somewhere but in this instance, Mum was very clear that she wanted the shoot to happen down by the River Itchen in Twyford. This is a place that is very dear to Mum as it is where she grew up and used to play with her own cousins! This is brilliant for me as I think the idea of shooting somewhere personal and significant makes the whole photo shoot much more special and meaningful!
Photographing the Kids
Photographing these four was an absolute dream I have to be honest. Yes the older boy started off being silly and pulling silly faces, but this never phases me. As a primary school teacher in a previous life, I am more than used to different behaviour and feel I have enough tricks up my sleeve to put it right! In this instance, because he was old enough – I showed him the images that I’d taken so far. These invariably involved him sticking his tongue out or doing weird things with his eyes, so when I asked him if these are the sorts of images Mum was paying me to get, he realised that he’d been a bit daft and sorted himself out straight away and was perfect after that! That’s the thing with kids – I have yet to meet a child who doesn’t want to impress their Mum or make their parents proud of them!
The four cousins were all really easy going and up for anything I tried which was just imense! I spend a lot of my time chasing younger ones around or persuading them to do certain things, so when slightly older children come along and just comply straight away – it’s a bit of a revelation!
We started off on the bridge as the background light was just divine! We all had a great time and the kids especially enjoyed watching me wade into the rather chilly river just so I could get a good shot of the four of them dangling their feet off the bridge! I will always do anything possible to get in the right position for a shot regardless of what it takes; an hour later I even ended up accidentally lying in a cow pat in the field as I crawled backwards in the grass when the children were running towards me! But that’s another story for another day!
