A Family Photoshoot at St Catherine’s Hill
As a family photographer in Winchester and surrounding areas, one of the first questions I ask families is where they would like to shoot at. The beauty of my family shoots is that they are up to 3 hours and at a location of the family’s choosing. I always recommend a location that is personal or special to the family, if and where possible. If there is nowhere suitable then I direct my clients to my location blog. This is a blog that I am always updating with new and fresh ideas of locations I have shot at, which hopefully will provide some inspiration.
Today I am showcasing St Catherine’s Hill, which you are bound to know if you are local to Winchester. This chalk downland stands 70m above the River Itchen which flows along the bottom of it. If you’re up there on a clear day, the views acoss Winchester are sensational.
Why St Catherine’s Hill?
As I said above, whenever a client approaches me about a shoot, I always ask if they have a location that is significant to them. The Fry family were keen to go to St Catherine’s Hill as it is a place that holds many happy memories for Claire. Plus as a family with a dog and pre-schooler, they obviously wanted space where everyone could run free!
There are different routes to get up to the top of the hill, but as this shoot took place in May, we were keen not to rush as nobody wants to look shiny and sweaty for a shoot!
The location did not disappoint. The views were absolutely stunning, and Claire, Scott and their son Josh had a great time. The beauty of a 3 hour family shoot is the lack all stress and rushing about. It meant that if Josh wanted a snack or just run around, then we could afford that time!
The beauty of St Catherine’s Hill, is the lush greens and beautiful landscapes. We even found a rope swing which was just perfect! This is definitely a location for Summer rather than Winter though as I am sure you will agree. as it would look quite bare and sad in the Winter! This is why I have written the seasonal guide to shoots so people can bear this in mind!
My Style of Photos
So anybody who has had a shoot with me before, will know that my style is just fun and free! I will always ask at the beginning for any banker shots that you want, and in this instance it was important for Claire and Scott to have their fur baby in their photos as well, so I made sure to include her in as many as possible.
As much as I like to know the banker shots, I also really like to react to the environment and space, hence the swing, the log and then running around and playing with bubbles!
